Composting – Wise waste management.

A major issue facing modern society is waste management. More simply put, what should we do with the waste we produce? A growing emphasis has been placed on the three R’s: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Composting provides a means of accomplishing all three of the R’s. Through composting the amount of garbage sent to the landfill is reduced, the organic matter is reused rather than dumped, and it is recycled into a useful soil amendment.

Natural ecosystems have a proven method of breaking down organic materials into a useful end-product: the decomposers found within the food chain break down nature’s organic waste and turn it into humus, the organic component of soil.

Composting is a way of harnessing the natural process of decomposition to speed up the decay of waste. The history of composting dates back to the history of early agriculture. Many find that composting is as much of an art as a science. Recent concern about managing wastes and producing food in an environmentally sound manner has led to a renewed interest in small-scale, backyard composting as well as an interest in developing large-scale, commercial and municipal composting systems.

Designing successful composting systems requires an understanding of certain biological, chemical, and physical processes such as the movement of air, uptake of carbon and nitrogen, and heat production and transfer.

Paper Cup Is Destroying the Environment & Your Health

As we have accepted convenience as our attitude – we should also accept that due to our excessive usage of paper cups is destroying our environment and our health.

People should understand that disposable paper-cups are coated with para wax or very thin plastic film to hold the liquids.

These linings, especially among low quality cups can indeed melt and get into your digestive tract leading to gastrointestinal disorders and other health issues.

Consider hot coffee / tea poured into a paper cup. What happens? “The migration of poly wax or polyethylene  from a cup into the beverage it contains has been observed to be as high as 0.025% for a single use. That may seem like a rather low number, until you work it this way: If you drink beverages from poly coated cups four times a day for three years, you may have consumed about one foam cup’s worth of styrene along with your coffee/tea.”

On the other hand on environmental front paper biodegrades and leaving behind thin plastics. This thin plastics contaminate our air and water bodies -This is serious threat to our lives as well as animals on ground and marine animals.  As you are aware of plastic – it will degrade only in next 500 – 1000 years. Most disposable products do not decompose in a landfill, or may release dangerous gases like methane if decomposed anaerobically. Moreover, this plastic resin prevents recycling of paper cups, which in turn demands more paper, harming the environment again, in the form of deforestation.

There is one thing we cannot deny and that’s the fact that people have been pretty careless in the use of conventional plastics around the world, endangering the natural environment around us.

Conventional plastic recycling of flexible packaging is often not possible, as many packaging solutions cannot go into the recycling system. There are a number reasons for this including that flexible packages are difficult to collect and separate by both the consumer and the recycling facility. This is why composting with food waste as an alternative is increasingly being considered by major brands and retailers.

Plastic packaging is an issue. World wide people  discard 600 million tons of plastics year. The world’s population throws away enough annually to surround the Earth x4. Plastics are not only capable of releasing their toxins into the environment, but they will take a pretty long time to decompose.  On an average, we only recycle about 8% of the plastic we manufacture. Most of these products are made for a single use. (i.e. a straw or cup at a restaurant that’s used and thrown away.) Packaging is also major culprit. How many times do we eat a bag of chips or a chocolate bar and toss the plastic wrapper in the trash?”

It is important that you have to initiate effective waste management plan that incorporates all of your recycling and waste requirements. This not only means ensuring that waste is properly managed on-site, but that it is regularly collected and that it is properly disposed of on a regular basis.
